Meagher, Anthony (Tony) Christopher, 66 Waverley.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Anthony (Tony) Christopher Meagher of
Waverley at the age of 66 of a heart attack. Born in Halifax on August 20, 1948, Tony was the son of
Leonora Daphne (Wannell) Meagher and the late Eric Ephraim Meagher, much-loved husband of Carol
(Blackmore) Meagher, proud father and grandfather.
Tony was a lifelong resident of Waverley where he attended school, built his home and raised his
family, the center of his life. His tremendous commitment to family was always evident whether
through his involvement in his son Michael’s activities as coach of his soccer team, Cub leader, building and
racing go-carts together, or supporting his daughter Tracey in her baseball and Cheema activities, and acting as an
‘always on call taxi service’ for both Tracey and Michael during their teenage years.
Tony took great pride in whatever he did, his motto being, any job worth doing is worth doing well’ and
this was clearly manifested in both his work and personal life. He spent his early career with Speedy
Muffler, soon rising to the position of manager where his management and people skills were
recognized at an award dinner in Montreal. After several years with Speedy Muffler, Tony changed
careers, joining Procor in order to spend more quality time with his beloved family. In 1983 he joined
the Archdiocese of Halifax as Buildings and Property Supervisor where he spent the rest of his career
until he joined Carol in retirement in 2008. His close and treasured friendship with Archbishop Emeritus
James Hayes, formed during his time with the Archdiocese, continued throughout his retirement years.
Carol was truly his life partner in every sense; never apart, they enjoyed doing everything as a couple,
always supportive of one another through good times and bad. While Tony’s retirement years were
sadly shortened, he made the most of every single day, whether spending cherished time with family at
their Lake Mush Mush cottage, or dining out with Carol at favourite restaurants where he made
immediate friends with the staff and owners by his jovial, friendly personality. Together they cared for their
daughter Tracey in her last years until she passed away from MS in 2014. It was Tracey’s wish that
her Mom and Dad enjoy their dream trip to Florida for the winter months and they were able to realize
that dream this winter, returning to Waverley only one week ago.
Tony will be remembered by all who knew him as a kind and generous person, always ready and willing
to help anyone, whether family, friend, neighbour or complete stranger. He made friends where ever
he went and while he treasured all of his friendships he will be especially missed by Dianne and Wayne
Decker, of Waverley and Gerry and Wayne Baker of East Jeddore.
Besides his mother, Tony is survived by his wife Carol (Blackmore), son Michael (Diana) (her sons Derek
and Gabriel) , Beaver Bank, brothers John (Liz), Hammonds Plains, Ted (Beaver Bank), sister Suzzette
Pryde (Ben) Lower Sackville, grandsons, Nicholas Andrews, Samuel, and Simon Meagher, brother-in-law
Bruce Blackmore, Halifax, several nieces and nephews; Tony Blackmore, Tonya Blackmore (Jacqueline
Parker), Troy Blackmore (Petra) (Olivia and Fisher Blackmore), Krista Meagher ( husband Jeffrey Gillis) (Ella Gillis),
Shawn Meagher and Adam Pryde. Tony was predeceased by his father Eric Meagher, daughters Tracey
and Kimberley Meagher.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Homes, Lower Sackville where visitation
will take place on Saturday, March 14th from 7-9 PM. Funeral Mass and celebration of Tony’s life will
take place on Tuesday, March 17th at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Fall River at 10 a.m.
Reverend Father Duncan MacMaster officiating, reception to follow. Interment will be at Gate of
Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hope
Cottage or any other charity that supports the needs of the homeless, a cause that was near and dear to
his heart.
