Deborah Jean Sampson
October 16, 1955-February 21, 2015
It is with a joyful heart that the family of Debbie Sampson announce that her suffering from Alzheimer's Disease has finally ended. We are sorrowful for her untimely passing; but realize it would be selfish of us to ask her to be spared when her quality of life had declined so very quickly during the past 4 years.
Debbie was raised in Lower Sackville by Cecil and Jean Ferguson (both previously deceased). Debbie is survived by her two children; Amy MacIntyre (Stewart) and their adorable children Brooklyn and Ryder of High Prairie, Alberta. Even in her darkest hour, looking at a picture of her grandchildren still brought a twinkle to her eyes! Her son, Gavin Sampson of L'Ardoise and his special friend Tanya Delorey. Brother and sisters are: Lloyd (Peggy) of Beaver Bank, Darrell (Sue Galbraith) Windsor Junction, Blaine (Sandra) Lower Sackville, Valerie Muir (Stuart), Windsor Junction, Jean Ferguson (John Hope), Oakfield Cecil (Joanne) of Antrim Road, Jeff (Eva Hoare), St. Margaret's Bay, her uncle David Ferguson (Jill), Woodstock, Ont., as well as many special nieces, nephews and cousins.
Debbie graduated from the NSCC Hairdressing program in 1974. She practiced hairdressing in the Metro area and continued to do so after she moved to L'Ardoise, Cape Breton. Debbie also worked at Dean's Flowers in Halifax from 1972-1975.
In September of 1975 she married the love of her life, Arnie Sampson. They had two children, Gavin and Amy. They eventually moved from Halifax and made L'Ardoise, Cape Breton their family home. While living there she and Arnie were owners of a gas bar/convenience store in L'Ardoise. In the area Debbie was known as the first one to help with local fundraising activities or meet the needs of a family going through a personal crises. Debbie was known for the beautiful wedding flowers she would make for many of the newlyweds in the area. She was a dedicated parishioner of the Holy Guardian Angel Church congregation and also did public speaking at several of the special Retreats that were held. Life circumstances changed; in 1998 Debbie moved back to the Metro area and continued caring for others by being a personal home care worker to the elderly.
While living in L'Ardoise Debbie had made many friends. Life-long friends that while she lived at the Ivy Meadow's Nursing Home in Beaver Bank continued to visit her. The family would like to thank Lisa MacEachern, Paula Sampson, Maureen Sampson, Stevie Sampson, Noreen and Ronnie Berrette, Nancy and John Mombourquette, Nancy and Kelly Clannon, Bruce and Marie Prout and Paulette Sampson for their unwavering friendship.
As a teenager, Debbie had a very special friend named Theresa Blair, now Theresa Cobb. The family would like to give Theresa a special thank you for the many hours she spent providing compassion to Debbie at the Ivy Meadows Continuing Care Community.
Debbie's ex-husband Arnie Sampson and his companion Judy Langdon, provided love and friendship to her throughout the last four years. Your unending support did not go un-noticed by everyone, including Debbie.
Four years ago Debbie was diagnosed with Early On-set Dementia- a form of Alzheimer's. Day-by-day she lost her ability to work, communicate and live independently. On February 27, 2015 it would have been two years that she would have made the Ivy Meadows in Beaver Bank her home. The family would like to acknowledge all of the staff that have worked with Debbie while she lived in the Jacob's Walk wing. Each and every one of you are appreciated for the many hours of special care you provided for our beloved Debbie. It takes exceptional people to meet the unique needs of individuals with any form of Alzheimer's Disease.
Even in her demise, Debbie will still be giving to others. She has made her earthly body a contribution to Alzheimer's and other medical research through Dalhousie University. Cremation will take place.
Please join the family in a celebration of Debbie's time with us on earth to be held at the Atlantic Funeral Home in Lower Sackville from 2-4 and 7-9 on Wednesday, February 25, 2015. Refreshments to be served after each visitation. Internment and church service will take place at Holy Guardian Angel Church, L'Ardoise, Cape Breton, in July at a date yet to be determined.
Flowers are welcome because Deb loved them! The family would also appreciate any financial donations to be made payable to the Ivy Meadows Continuing Care Community-Recreation Department in memory of Debbie Sampson. On-line condolences may be sent to www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com Sackville Chapel.
