
THORNE, Donald, Lower Sackville/Pigott Lake. It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Don Thorne, on January 4, 2012 at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, NS. Don was the son of the late Frederick and Florence (Kendall) Thorne.Born in West End Halifax, he would often joke about his days spent with the Salter Boys on West and Davidson Streets. Don was retired from Correctional Services, Province of Nova Scotia, and was a former member of the Canadian Armed Forces. Always a joker, Don was known for his great sense of humour and always enjoyed his fishing days with his dog, Neka on Pigott Lake. Don will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 47 years, Margaret (Hartlen-Hillison); son, Cory (Denise); step-daughters, Joan (Bob Kwiatkowski), Ontario, Mickie (Thom Shields), Middle Sackville, Gloria (Melvin MacIntyre), Alberta, Joanne (Martin Clayton), Spryfield; son-in-law and childhood friend, Dennis Salter, many loving grand and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephew, special granddaughter, Olivia whom he adored. Don is also survived by brothers, Leo (Joan), Calgary; Stanley (Linda), Windsor, Ontario; Gerald, Lower Sackville; Frank (Barbara), Lower Sackville; sisters, Frances Billard, Dartmouth, Anna Stewart (Wayne), Lower Sackville, Sandra Kelly-Fraser (Kenneth), Lower Sackville Fay Bellefontaine (Cletus), Bedford and Joy Pottie, Lower Sackville. He was predeceased by step-daughter, Doe, (Catherine Hillison-Salter), sisters, Nancy Kidd and Florence Walker and loving companion his German Shepard, Neka. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the nursing staff and doctors at Palliative Care, Hants Community Centre for their compassion and support at this most difficult time. Special thank-you to granddaughters Sherry and Tracy. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Homes, Sackville. As per Don’s request there will be no visitation. Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Don’s memory can be made to Hants Community Centre, Windsor, Nova Scotia Palliative Care Unit.
