GRANTHAM, DONALD VINCENT, CD – 85, of Upper Sackville, It is with great sadness that we announce Donald (Don) Vincent Grantham has passed away peacefully at home in Upper Sackville on Jan 7th, 2016. Born June 15th, 1930 at home on Fayes Lane Halifax, Don was the 3rd oldest of 10 children of Roy Herbert Grantham and Catherine (Dean) Grantham.
In his teenage years Don exhibited his passion to serve his country by joining the Sea Cadets. Don went on to spend many years in Army reserves as a member of the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. He retired as Regimental Sergeant major of the Halifax Service Battalion. It was with the reserves that Don became an expert Marksman and was recognized by the Military for this achievement. These skills would serve him well for many years as an avid outdoorsman and hunter his entire life.
As a young man Don was no stranger to hard work. He built a successful Tire business while in Yarmouth and later an Automotive Parts business in the Metro Halifax area and later expanding throughout Newfoundland and Nova Scotia where he travelled selling his products to his customers who he also became great friends with even after his retirement. In fact Don was presented with his 50 year pin in 2013 as a member of the United Commercial Travelers Association. It was many years on the road than Don honed his ability to connect with people of any background or status and allowed him to make many more friends as he and wife Marlene travelled throughout the years both before and after retirement. . Throughout his working career Don still found time to serve his communities by becoming a member of the Lions Club in Yarmouth and later the Metro Halifax branches of the Canadian Legion.
Travelling was always a passion for Don as he, Marlene and, for many years, faithful dog Romar logged a lot of miles in the RV as they travelled the USA and Canada until eventually finding a favorite spot in Texas in the Rio Grande Valley to spend the winters in one place. A lover of dogs Don was accompanied to heavens gates with the newest member of the family Mali, a Nova Scotia Duck Toller, who gave him great companionship and comfort during a difficult year.
Don will be missed by his family and friends especially missed by his two best buddies Bill and Dave. Over many years Don, with Bill and/or Dave enjoyed a cold beverage as they listened to Dons Music Collection, talked about Dons unique collection of folk art and antiques or played in the dirt of Dons many flower or vegetable gardens.
Don is survived by his wife of 45 years Marlene ( Lane ) Grantham; his son John ( Mandy) and daughter Sara Crews both of Halifax; his three grandchildren Michelle Crews, Jeff and Jennifer Grantham; sister Madeleine MacLeod of Lexington Mass. USA; brothers Ed in Calgary; Vern and Tom in Halifax and many nieces and nephews. Don was predeceased by his sister Vera Steeves and brothers Harry and Clyde as well as Garnet and Lenny who passed away in their youth.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the VON; Northwood Home Care and Palliative Care staff for their compassionate care and support during the past several months.
A celebration of Don’s life will be held at the Sackville Lions Club, 101 Old Beaverbank Rd. Lower Sackville on Friday Jan 15th 2016 from 2 -4 pm . According to Don's wishes, cremation has taken place and interment took place in Oakridge Memory Gardens, Lower Sackville.
For those wishing to make donations the family ask you to consider the following worthy recipients, VON Greater Halifax, QEII Foundation Palliative Care Unit or Salvation Army.
