
RIDGEWAY, Frank - 80, of Lower Sackville, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2012, in the VG Site, QEII. Frank was born in Surrey, England on September 9, 1931. His foster parents were the late Lily and George Turner. Frank was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy in 2011, and his daughter, Deborah in 1989. He is survived by his children, Christopher (Julie), California; Tammy (Bob Baldwin), Calgary, Alta., and Marcus, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Warren, Troy, Stephanie (and their mother Margo), Deborah, Danielle and sisters, Elsie Weaver and Phyllis Wright of Thaxted England. Franks lifelong passion was music. He learned to play trumpet as a young boy and never put it down. His professional career started in 1948 with the Royal Air Force in England. Frank immigrated to Canada in 1954 and continued his military and musical career with the Stadacona Band and the National Band of the Naval Reserve. In 1965 he spent a year with the world famous London Palladium Orchestra, returning to Nova Scotia and the Royal Canadian Navy in 1966. Over the years Frank was always very much involved in the music scene in and around Nova Scotia: conducting, performing, recording and teaching privately and at Acadia University. A number of his former students are now professional musicians. Frank performed on a regular basis with the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Nova Scotia. He was frequently featured on CBC Halifax radio and television, most notably with the Dave Woods Orchestra. From its inception in 1979, Frank organized and directed the Fanfare Trumpets of the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo. He was a founding member of Scotia Brass and for the past 10 years was principal Trumpet of the Sackville Community Band. For 26 years he led the 'Tuesday Night Band' at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography. Our family would like to recognize and thank Dr. Derek Wilkie and the nursing staff at theVGSite, QEII floor 5A for their compassionate care. A celebration of Frank’s life will be held in Faith Tabernacle, 6225 Summit St. (corner of Summit and Windsor Street) on Tuesday, July 24 at 11 a.m., Pastor John Cheyne officiating.
