<div itemprop="description">MATTHEWS, George Henry - It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, George Henry Matthews of Beaver Bank NS, at the age of 91, on December 24, 2015. George passed away at the Hants Community Hospital, with family by his side. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late James and Florence Matthews. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years Margaret; Grandson Timothy Kenney. George is survived by his sons Malcolm (Heather), David (Mary), Mark (Heather) all of Beaver Bank and Daughter Gail (John) Kenney, Barrington NS. He was the proud Grandfather of Nyree, Brennan (Christina), Becky (Neil), Mitchell, Cameron, Emily and Great Granddaughter Kaityn.He was also survived by his sister and brothers, Carol Pope, Kentville, NS, Don( Pat) Grafton, NS and Bill (Edna) Beaver Bank, NS along with many nieces and nephews. He worked for the NS Public Welfare from 1947 until 1957 when he enrolled at the Maritime Social Work School. Upon his graduation he was appointed as Supervisor of Child Welfare. He retired after 29 years of service as the Director of Rehabilitation and Community Services. During his years of service he was instrumental is many advancements most notably the development of a provincial network of Vocational Rehabilitation Workshops that continues today. In 1986, he purchased a country store in West Gore, NS which he operated until 2000. He retired once again to his Beaver Bank hobby farm. He dedicated his life to his family and community. He held many volunteer positions over his life some of them were a founding member of the Lake District Recreation Association (LDRA), Treasurer of the Church of the Good Shepherd. Warden of St. Johns church parish, Provincial &amp; National Camping Association. He received many accolades for years of dedication and service like being inducted &ldquo;as a builder &ldquo;in the Sackville Sport Heritage Hall of Fame in 2010 and an Honorary Lifetime Member of the LDRA. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at 2pm at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 28 Trinity Lane Beaver Bank, NS there will be a reception following the Service. In lieu of Flowers donations can be made to the church of the Good Shepherd Building Fund. The family would like to thank the staff of Unit 200 of the Hants Community Hospital for their tremendous care. <br /> <br /></div>
