Irene Cecelia McKinnon
January 26, 1959 - December 1, 2015
On Dec 1st, 2015, with deepest hearts we regret to announce the passing of Irene McKinnon nee Brufatto. After a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s we say good-bye to a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. Leaving behind is the love of her life, husband of 25 years Richard. Irene was an amazing mother to her children Luke, and her daughter Tayler who predeceased her only two years ago.
Born in Glace Bay Irene was the sixth child of Louis and Norma Brufatto’s ten children. Surviving are Barbara Yates, Glace Bay; Donald (Darlene) Lingan; Diane Smith, Sackville NS; James (Bev) Glace Bay; Pauline Coolen (John) Sydney; David, Alberta; Patricia Gerrits (Edwin) Kentville; Brenda Clements (Terry) Glace Bay as well as brother in law Chris MacNeil.
Saddened as well by her passing are her mother and father in-law Rita and George Bailey, Glace Bay. Also left to mourn is her brother in-law Gary (Sandy) Ontario; sisters in-law Debbie Muise (Hugh) Glace Bay; and Ellen Ferguson (Greg) Glace Bay. She was loved and adored by numerous nieces and nephews.
In the early years of her career she worked as an administrative assistant and later received a degree in Computer Programming at CBU. Following this she relocated to Halifax and was employed with Maritime Life (Manulife) and completed her career at CGI. She was well respected in her field of employment and incurred many friendships throughout the years.
Motherhood was always Irene’s main priority and focus of her life. Many early mornings at the rink and late evenings at the dance studio she took great pride in everything they accomplished. As a beautiful seamstress; she shared her talents generously to anyone who asked and gave her time willingly and freely.
All who had the honor or privilege of knowing Irene understood her thoughtful ways and ability to always put others needs first, she was truly the epitome of a loving, kind and compassionate woman whose smile was genuine and her feelings sincere.
Irene was predeceased by her daughter Tayler, sister Jeanette, brother in-law Francie Yates and brother in law Kevin Smith.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all of those special individuals from Northwood Home Care that were a part of Irene’s everyday life for which she was thankful.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia or your local food bank.
