It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our Dad, CDR John (Jack) F. McGuire CD, LRAM (Ret'd) at Camphill Memorial Hospital on November 26, 2011. Born in Halifax on March 3, 1925, Dad was the son of William and Mary McGuire and was the last remaining member of his immediate family. Dad was predeceased by his loving wife Vi in 2009 after 62 years of marriage. Mom was so proud of Dad and his many accomplishments and is waiting for her "Jackie" with open arms and a kiss. Dad was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and is survived by daughters Linda (Terry Scallion) and Debbie and grandchildren Steven, Denise, Robin and granddaughter Hannah, all of whom he loved dearly. Dad was a veteran of the Second World War and joined the Band Branch in 1943. He had a long and successful career in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) first as a bandsman and then as a Director of Music for several bands and ending his career with the Stadacona Band in 1975. Dad then worked as the Staff Officer/Director (The Boss) for the Naval Reserve National Band (NRNB) until 1987. In 1979 Dad became the Principal Arranger and Director of the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo writing hundreds of fanfares , marches and finales until he retired in 2006. During his life Dad composed and arranged music dedicated to various individuals and groups over the years. In 1999 the CD Marching with McGuire was released. Dad was a kind, loyal, generous man whose two passions in life were his family and music. Dad was an avid fisherman in his early years and enjoyed working in the garden. Dad loved Christmas and enjoyed decorating the house. We would like to thank the staff of 6E at Camphill for the wonderful care and kindness shown to Dad during his stay. A special thank you to Peter Magwood for visiting and spending time with Dad and for presenting Dad on Remembrance Day with the beautiful beaded poppy which was handmade by mother and daughter Genevieve Julian and Valerie Julian Meader from Millbrook. As per Dad’s wishes, cremation and a private family burial has taken place. We would like to invite family and friends to a reception in Celebration of Dad’s Life at the Royal Canadian Legion in Bedford, Saturday December 3 from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm.If you so wish, donations can be made to the Camphill Memorial Gardens or a Charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made to the family by visiting the website www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com and selecting the Sackville Chapel.
