John George Obritsch
January 6, 1923 - April 13, 2013
AIRLANE GOLF COURSE CO-FOUNDER DIES AT AGE 90
John George Obritsch, 90, Halifax, passed away surrounded by family at home on April 13, 2013. Born January 06, 1923 in Fox Valley, Saskatchewan, he was the son of Nicholas and Philomena (Selinger) Obritschkewitsch. At a young age, John joined the army during WW11. He often joked about his “overseas” posting in Labrador. He was later transferred to Halifax where he met his future wife of 66 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Algee. Throughout his life, John loved to compete at baseball, bowling and particularly golf. Frustrated by the limited number of tee times available in the Halifax area, John and his partner Ronald Algee purchased 100 acres of land on the Old Guysborough Rd. where they built a full length 9 hole golf course. John grew up on a farm in southern Saskatchewan and later became a machinist with the DND. His mechanical skills and ability to work the land were ideally suited for his foray into the golfing business. The original 9 hole layout opened in 1968 and is still owned and operated by his and Ron’s sons. One of John’s proudest moments was when, at the age of 79, he shot his age on this relatively difficult layout. John loved the game of golf and made many friends over the years. He was always quick to place a wager and more often than not he won. He continued to play regularly up until his recent illness. John would have been embarrassed by any list of his accomplishments. Nevertheless, his family is extremely proud of him. He built a solid sustainable business which continues to reap the benefits of his hard labour. To him we will always be grateful. And dad, when you get to the other side, don’t forget to save us a tee-time… John is survived by his wife, Betty, sons, Gary (Carol), Lake Fletcher, Lee (Sandra), Bridgewater; Philip (Kandace), Lower Sackville; Kevin (Laurel), Lower Sackville; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by grandson, John Garfield; brothers, Jack, Gregor, Frank and sister. Agnes. No visitation. A memorial service and celebration of John’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 16, at 2 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville with a reception to follow in the family reception lounge. Interment to follow in Oakridge Memory Gardens, Middle Sackville. NS. Immediate family only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of NS. On line condolences may be made by visiting the website www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com and selecting the Sackville chapel
