Mary Gladys “Glady” MacNeil died at home on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016 in Bedford, N.S. at the age of 82.
Mom is survived by her brother James L. MacNeil, daughters Mary Lee Stephenson (Len) and Jane Tolson (Paul), sons Michael Woodford (Angela Frank) and John Woodford (Teresa), grandchildren Kent, Michael Jr., Karen, Katie, Jillian, Zane, and Aidan, and five great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents, Jimmy P. and Utah MacNeil.
Mom was born on April 1, 1934 in New Waterford, N.S. Along with raising her family, she worked for many years at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. She later found her passion in the tourism industry, both promoting Cape Breton Island and guiding bus tours throughout Atlantic Canada and the U.S. Her volunteer efforts included the Junior St. Ann’s Society, the I.O.D.E., the Red Cross, TeleMed, and the social committee at the McKeen Manor. She was proud of her Scottish heritage, taking Gaelic lessons and following her roots on a trip to Scotland. Mom loved music of all kinds, from the old Scottish reels to modern pop. She loved arts and crafts, shopping, and reading, and cherished time with her beloved grandchildren. Her recent discovery of social media allowed her to stay in touch with friends and family on her iPad. We will miss Mom’s acerbic wit but most of all, we will miss her touch and love.
Special thanks to Dr. Howard Conter, the Northwood Care Workers, and the first responders who attended to her.
A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, November 23 at 11 a.m. in St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Lower Sackville, N.S., with a reception to follow at the church. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Glady’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tema Conter Memorial Trust at tema.ca.
