Melvin Luke O'Leary
April 8, 1929 - March 31, 2012
O’Leary, Melvin Luke – Age 82, of Lower Sackville, passed away at his home he built with his own hands on March 31, 2012. Melvin was born in Queensport, Guysborough county, son of the late Arthur Joseph and Evelyn May (Richard) O’Leary. Mel retired in 1980 at the age of 50, after a successful career as a forman with Cyril L. Dauphinee Trucking, and later was promoted as supervisor of the environmental services division, in charge of oil spills and environmental clean up. He enjoyed life on the golf course, in the bowling alley, and around the card table, with friends and family. He collected seven holes-in-one and once possessed the Perfect Hand in 45’s. He was an avid Montreal Canadians and Toronto Blue Jays fan. He could also be seen as the host of the local television show “Seniors in Action”. He was proud to be a lifetime member and promoter to bring The Christopher leadership program to the region in the late 1970's. He held the position of chief evaluator, and served 4 years on the national board of The Lumen Institute. Melvin was a member of St. John Vianney parish and was a longstanding Caretaker for the church. He was also known as Mr. Green Tree, for his many years of volunteer work selling christmas trees. Mel is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bernadette (Daley) O'Leary; his daughters, Marilyn (Jefferson III) O’Leary-Morris and Sheila O’Leary, and son, Shawn (Shauna) O’Leary and cherished grandchildren; Lynden, Jefferson IV, Bryson and Ethan. He is survived by brothers and sisters, Marion O'Leary; Ruth (John) Jessome; James (Jeanette); Sylvia Kiley; Irene O'Leary; Priscilla LeClair; Terry (Anne); Barbara (Mike) Delorey; Diane (Bill) Mader. He was pre-deceased by brother Ronald (Marie). Visitation will be held at Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville, on Mel's birthday, Sunday April 8th, 2012 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held at St. John Vianney parish on Tuesday April 10th, 2012 at 11:00 am. Burial to follow at Gate of Heaven cemetery on Sackville Drive. Reception to follow at St. John Vianney hall. If desired, memorial donations may be made in Mel's memory to The Heart and Stroke foundation. It is with a sad heart that we say goodbye.
