<div itemprop="description">ATKINSON, Norman Joseph - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Norman Joseph Atkinson, Bedford, at the QE Health Sciences Centre on September 23, 2013. Born in Lockeport, N.S. in 1940, he was the son of the late Alice and Joseph Atkinson. His career started with the RCMP (class of 1961), with postings in Newfoundland and Labrador, and later serving in the Security and Intelligence Division in Toronto and Halifax. From 1978 to 1987, he worked at the Department of Supply and Services in the Ministry of Public Works, Province of Nova Scotia. As part of his position he was a key coordinator of several Royal Visits and numerous VIP events. Norman was active in sports and outdoor activities, playing baseball in his youth and later enjoying sailing, hockey, hunting, and golf with his family and friends. His memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him. <br /> <br />Norman is survived by his children, Stephen and grandchildren Samantha and Natalie, Sackville; Keith and grandchildren Kelsie and Leah, Sackville; Susan (Rod) Wood and grandchildren Mary and Kathryn, Edmonton; Kathryn (Laurence) Gillis, Victoria; and Stephen (Lea) Gillis, Dartmouth;sisters, Patricia, Halifax; Judy (Gerald), La Have;brothers, Bruce (Fran), Shelburne; Alan, Lockport; and Tim (Cheryl), Bridgewater; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Marilyn Jean Atkinson. Special gratitude to Dr. David MacNeil and to the QEII Infirmary 8.2 staff. <br />Funeral service will be held 1 pm, Monday September 30, 2013 in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville. Rev. James Haughn officiating. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer&rsquo;s Society of Canada.
