WELL KNOWN SACKVILLE BUSINESSMAN PASSES AWAY
Davis, Owen Malcolm - 73, Our father, our brother, our friend of South Rawdon (born in Lower Sackville), has passed away peacefully in Fall River on October 12, 2011. Owen was a son of the late Clarence and Irene (Dauphinee) Davis of Lower Sackville. Owen’s passion for country music and old time fiddling, his devotion to senior citizens (he always contended that seniors were disenfranchised by private radio), and his frustration when KIXX Country went off the air, led to the launch of Sackville Special Event Radio. In October, 2009, he began putting the "pieces" in place assisted by volunteers. The launch of 106.9FM at 6am on Saturday, April 3, 2010, was one of Owen’s proudest moments, as the station went "live" to the surrounding community. The next 16 months were a special time, as the station, guided and overseen by the Cobequid Community Radio Society (chaired by Owen) became a vital part of the communities it served and the Society members worked diligently toward fulfilling Owen’s dream of turning Sackville Special Event radio into a full-fledged community station. Sadly, due to Owen’s failing health, the radio station has been temporarily "mothballed", but among his parting wishes was a heartfelt request for the volunteers to carry on and make the community station a reality. Owen was a great supporter of the Sackville Lions club. He played a major role for the Club’s fundraiser for the first hockey rink in Sackville. He was a charter (founding) member of the Lions Club and served as President in 1974-75. He loved International Farmall tractors, having collected 225 tractors and implements, with the Farmall H being his favourite. He also had a collection of international antique trucks. He was a member of the Bedford Legion Calais Branch #95. Owen was a faithful customer of The Bank of Nova Scotia for 55 years, opening an account in Bedford in 1956 and continued to the Sackville branch, thank you John McLean, Ross Hepditch, Sophie Richer, Glenn Russell and the staff of Scotia Bank. He was raised in Mount Uniacke Lodge on May 15, 1973 He was Master of the Lodge in 1977. Owen was District Deputy Grand Master (Hants County) in1983. He received the Meritorious Service Award from Uniacke Lodge in 1998. Grand Lodge was checked with respect to membership in concordant Bodies. He had been a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite member since March 24, 1979. He was founding member of the Sackville Masonic lodge. He played a pivotal role in the formation of Sackville Lodge #137 and was recently recognized and honoured as a Founding and Charter member by the Brethren of Sackville Lodge along with his paternal Brothers Roy, Loran and Vernon. On April 3, 1956, Owen started Owen Davis Trucking Limited. His passion and love for trucks could be seen in the pride of his trucks "Western Stars" although he owned other brand names. At the height of Owen Davis Trucking, he was the largest sole owned overdiminsional trucking firm in Eastern Canada. He would like to thank ALL his employees over the years for everything they had done for him, he was very grateful. Owen was a member of the Nova Scotia Road Builders Association along with Specialized Carriers and Riggers Association.
