HARTLIN, Roderick H. ”Rod” – 73, passed away peacefully on September 8th with his ‘sweetie’ and wife of 34 years, Lorraine, by his side. Born in Bridgewater, NS to Rev. Howard and Ruth Hartlin, Rod spent most of his childhood in Saint John, NB, Digby and Port Wade. Rod studied engineering at Acadia University and spent several years working and managing in the fields of plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning design and drafting before moving onto association management with the Construction Association of Nova Scotia. He volunteered in various capacities on the executive of the Halifax chapter of the American Society of Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), serving as president from 1979-1980. In 1984, Rod started his own heat pump business, Aqua Geo Air Heat Pump Systems, well before heat pumps were popular. He ran his business successfully for more than 25 years, serving all over Nova Scotia. Rod truly loved his work, and he especially enjoyed chatting with his customers and fellow contractors, where he made lasting friendships. Rod eventually settled in Middle Sackville when he bought a small cottage on the lake and built it into his family home. He loved the outdoors and would spend hours working on his yard and tending to his beloved vegetable garden, but what he most enjoyed was spending time with his family and friends and making them laugh. He was known for his jokes, poems and nicknames, and his infectious smile and sense of humor will be remembered and cherished forever. Rod is survived by his wife Lorraine, his three children, Kenny, Stephen and Kimberly (James), and his sisters, Jean and Marion (Delvin) He is predeceased by his mother, father, and brother Merle. The family extends their deepest gratitude to Northwood Ivany Place in Bedford, and especially to the angels on Bluenose, where Rod resided for five years. Words cannot express how much we appreciate the kindness and care you showed Rod and our family. You truly made Northwood a home for him. Thank you also to the amazing staff at the Palliative care unit at the VG and all of our friends and family for helping us through this difficult time. A service will be held on Friday, September 11 at 3:00pm at Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Drive. Reception to follow. Donations may be made to Northwoodcare Bedford Incorporated. Online condolences can be made at www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com (Sackville).
