Valerie Joan Hunter
August 6, 1929 - March 13, 2014
Valerie Joan (Alderson) Hunter, 84 - loving wife, devoted mother, beloved grandmother and great-grandmother, caring "big sister", loyal friend - departed this world on March 13, 2014 at the Halifax Infirmary Site, QEII Health Sciences Centre surrounded in love by family and friends.
The daughter of John and Grace Alderson, Valerie was born in Montreal in 1929 and moved at an early age to Toronto where in high school she met the love of her life, Tony Hunter. Thus began a 65 year journey with Tony of love, respect, raising sons John and Jeff, moving to Ottawa, Richmond Hill, London, Toronto and Windsor Junction, a secretarial career, building a cottage, dedicating herself as a Big Sister to Darcie and Julie, being a "Knit Wit", becoming an artist, travelling around the world, being a master of lists and organizer extraordinaire, and creating long lasting and true friendships wherever she went.
The grand dame of grace and elegance, Valerie led her life believing in the kindness of people and the power of a positive attitude, traits that she passed on to her family. Her motto for life was "everything in moderation" which well suited her practical approach to dealing with life's issues. At home, at work, when entertaining, when faced with challenges, Valerie was always the person who we all could model ourselves after.
Left to celebrate Valerie's spirit are her husband Tony; son John (Lois) and children Sarah Gazaneo (Andrew), Simeon (Jessica), Seth and great-grandson Hugo Gazaneo; son Jeffrey (Kristine) and children Christopher and Lauren; cousins Stephen Keay and Doreen Sykes, best friend of 60 years Jean (Ziba) Fisher; little sisters Darcie Huska and Julie Branston; and sisters-in-law Fern Hunter and Peggy Hunter.
Besides her parents Valerie was predeceased by grandson Samuel Hunter.
Special thanks for the love and support to so many including Sue and Dana and the neighbours on Eagle Point Drive, the workers at Maplestone and the wonderful and compassionate care workers at the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, especially April of 8.3 ward.
A celebration of Valerie's life will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Monday, March 17 at the Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville with a memorial service held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, March 18th at St. Thomas Anglican Church, Fall River, reception to follow. Private family interment to follow in Oakridge Memory Gardens. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Parkinson’s Society. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com (Sackville Chapel).
