<div itemprop="description">EDENS, Eric Lindsay<br>Of Bedford, passed away in the company of his family on Friday November 4th, 2016 at the age of 86. <br><br>Eric was born in Ballinderry, Northern Ireland September 1, 1930. He was the son of Katherine McWatters and Edward Edens. Eric joined the Royal Navy at 16 and trained as a machinist at Rothsyth, Scotland, followed by seagoing years and working to become a First Class Engineer by age 27. He served on the HMS Newcastle and HMS Indefatigable before leaving the navy after 11 years service. Eric immigrated to Canada to live in Nova Scotia where he served on cable ships Lord Kelvin and Cyrus Field with Western Union. Here in Halifax, he met Helen Poirier and married in October of 1961. He then left the sea and joined the Royal Insurance Company, and eventually Transport Canada, Ship Safety Division. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to purchase Hamilton and Porter Machine Works in Yarmouth and later the Meteghan Marine Railway. He established Atlantic Steel Boats in 1980 where he led the construction of 4 vessels before rejoining Transport Canada Ship Safety until retirement. After retirement he actively campaigned for wind power in Nova Scotia.<br><br>Eric is survived by sons Joseph (Tania), Fall River, N.S. and James (Robin Cowling), Linlithgow, Scotland and daughter Katharine (Brad Magor), Edmonton, Alberta; sister Joan Kean (Newtownards, Co. Down) and grandchildren Byron, Azlyn, Alicia, Inigo and Zeata. He was predeceased by his wife of 42 years Mary Helen (Poirier), and older brothers Cyril, Cecil, Roy, and sisters Eleanor, Ann. Eric will be fondly remembered by his best friend Velma Redden.<br><br>A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday November 9th, 2016 at 2 p.m. in Bedford United Church, 1200 Bedford Highway with Reverend David Hart officiating.
