C. Byron MacMillan - June 12, 1921- October 27, 2016

Passed away suddenly at home at the age of 95.

Byron was born in Amherst, NS to Medley and Grace MacMillan, and grew up in Pugwash Junction, N.S. There, he met the love of his life, June. They married in 1946 and moved to Spryfield where they raised their four children and were active members of the United Church, Marriage Encounter, and the Schizophrenia Society of Nova Scotia. In Spryfield, Byron was active with the Duke of Kent Lodge #121, volunteer fire dept, and Search & Rescue. Byron was a Royal Canadian Air Force veteran of WW2, and trained in Canada as a RADAR technician. He served briefly in England and then, and most notably, in India and Burma. Byron got his license in Amateur Radio in 1947 and maintained VE1AAP up until his last day. Byron worked for 38 years with the CBC radio and television, in Halifax, and was an active member of the CBC pensioners association.

After retirement, June and Byron moved to Mount Uniacke, becoming beloved members of the community and St. Paul's United Church where he was a life time elder, past board member, and sat on numerous committees. He served in roles as Chaplain (and Hants past district grand chaplain), Master, and Past Master with Uniacke Lodge #128. Byron had a deep appreciation for photography and often captured the simple beauty of nature. He loved fishing, hunting, and family days spent at ‘the camp’ on Lochaber Lake. Byron was known for his quick wit, his love of a good story, and his ability to solve Sudoku puzzles that left the rest of us stumped.

Byron is survived by daughter Barb (Paul) Bingham, sons Robbie and Sandy (Roxanne), and by grandchildren Patrick Oakley, Brenna and Jessica MacMillan, Roseann McNaughton, and great grandchildren Emily and Brendan Raymond, numerous nieces and nephews; and brother Gerry MacMillan.

He was predeceased by wife June, daughter Heather (Eric) Oakley, and his parents.

With recent passing of wife June, a joint funeral will be held at St Paul’s United in Mt. Uniacke, Friday November 4, from 1-2 pm, with reception to follow (2-4 pm).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul's United Church (Mt. Uniacke), the Schizophrenia Society of Nova Scotia, or Feed Nova Scotia.
