IMPEY, Ivan Gerald
Despite his strong-will and independent spirit, Gerry passed suddenly, in hospital, November 8, at age 83; born 1932 in Montréal, a son of Ivan Johnston Impey and Jamesena Isabella (MacDonnell).
Gerry was respected and loved by his many friends and acquaintances and known to always have a joke or a story for all.
Starting in 1947, Gerry advanced within the Canadian Pacific Railway Company to a position of Senior Accounting Clerk before embarking on his long career in the oil industry in 1960. He began as a Travelling Auditor in Ontario, Quebec & the Maritimes for PetroFINA, later PetroCanada, holding a variety of increasingly responsible positions at management levels in Distribtution before retiring in ‘89.
Gerry served both his country and his community during his lifetime: as a reservist in Montreal’s Royal Canadian Corps of Signals for nearly a decade, through FINA employee participation and dedication to the success of Expo67, as support crew for a many legs of the 1987-88 “Share The Flame” Olympic Torch Relay, and years in the 90s spent active with the Fall River & Riverlake District Lions Club – where he was recognized by the County of Halifax for Outstanding Volunteer Service in 1991, and by the Lions Club for both Exceptional and Devoted Service (1997) and as Lion of the Year.
He is predeceased by his parents and four siblings - Harry Knight, Muriel Elizabeth (Barnes), Beverly Patricia (Grovhough) and Doreen Gertrude (Salvin). In addition to his devoted wife of 60 years, Dorothy Eileen -Dolly- (Arnold), daughter Jamesena Ann and furry grandcat Charcoal, Gerry is survived by his brother Robert Angus and family, many Impey nephews and nieces as well great-nieces Sara and Jessica and their family of the Arnold line, who adored their Uncle Gerry.
We wish to extend grateful thanks to our wonderful neighbours, the nurses of the VON and, the staff of Northwood whose presence in our lives continued Gerry’s dream of living on his beautiful “Wellington Estate”.
Arrangements are in the care of Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville. By request, there will be a short visitation at 1 PM, Saturday, Nov 21, with a Memorial service at 2 PM; a small reception to follow. Donations in Gerry’s memory may be made to the MS Society of Canada or the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Online condolences may be directed to www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com (Sackville Chapel)
