<div itemprop="description">Sarah Lavinia Atwood (nee Nickerson), Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia passed away on May 15th, 2016 in her 97th year. Born in Oak Park, Shelburne County on Dec 30, 1918, Sarah grew up in Barrington Municipality and also lived in Roxbury Massachusetts for part of her childhood. She remembered those years in Roxbury fondly, partly she said, because there was a movie theater and a library. She continued to love reading and watching movies throughout her lifetime. Sarah was a wonderful baker, winning many ribbons at the winter fair for her biscuits, bread and cookies. Her gumdrop and war cakes were an integral part of family Christmas celebrations. She was a talented knitter and enjoyed bowling, bingo and crossword puzzles. Many of her neighbours fondly recall her sitting in her rocking chair with a cup of tea. Sarah was a WW2 veteran, serving in the RCA as a corporal. Sarah and her husband George were longtime, well known residents of Sackville. During her younger years she worked in retail. She also did volunteer work with Meals On Wheels, the Maritime Fiddle Festival and the Senior Olympics, among others. Sarah had an indomitable will and until a stroke at the age of 92 she was active in TOPS and yoga. Sarah was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, George Atwood, an infant son, parents Lloyd and Elmira Nickerson, sisters Florence Nickerson and Thelma Coughlin, brother Alvin Nickerson, and son-in-law Phillip Pointon. She is survived by brother Lloyd, children Louise Pointon and Janice Atwood (Gilles Duhamel), grandchildren Jennifer Myra (Kirstin Nucklaus), William Pointon ( Roberto Priolo), Sarah Pointon and Krista Smethurst (Darren); and great-grandchildren Sam, Cole, and Jessica.
